Comments: Hellen Forrest (Nee: MacArthur) | Herkimer NY United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: I have three old studio photographs belonging to the FORREST and MACARTHUR Families of New York. The three photographs are of:
1 - Ann FORREST, taken at the Brown Studio in Albany, NY in the 1890’s, she is in her 50’s or 60’s
2 - Lillias FORREST, aka Mrs. David J. FORREST, taken at the Gibbon Bros. Studio in Utica, NY in 1893, she is in her 30’s
3 - Helen MACARTHUR FORREST, taken at the T. J. Curran Studio in Herkimer, NY in 1880’s, she is in her 20’s or 30’s
Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding these women:
Hellen “Ellen” MCARTHUR was b. 31 Jul 1861 in Grant, NY to parents Donald Archibald MCARTHUR (1794-1873) and Ann MORRISON (1826-1890). Hellen was one of 6 children born to this couple including Mary Elizabeth; Donald Daniel; James Alexander; John; Lillias; and Hellen “Ellen” MCARTHUR, all born between 1849 and 1861. Her father was married previously and had 6 additional children including Alexander Duncan “Arthur”; Ann; Jennet “Jesse” D.; Daniel T.; Sarah; and Charles MCARTHUR, all born between 1818 and 1834.
Hellen was married twice, first to George H. FORREST (1851-1891) in 1890, and second to Leo Flint PAYNE (1878-1967) who she married in 1900. Hellen died 16 May 1915 in Russia, NY and she is buried in the Gravesville Cemetery in Gravesville, NY.
Hellen’s sister Lillias “Lillie” MCARTHUR was born on 26 Dec 1858 to the same parents and married David J. FORREST who was b. 31 Mar 1851 in Russia, NY to parents William FORREST (1805-1878) and Abigail HUNTER (1814-1889). David was one of 7 children born to this couple including, John; Maria or Mariah; William; Angeline J.; Mary E.; David J.; and Margaret E. FORREST, all born between 1836 and 1855. David and Lillias married on 8 Jan 1879 in Herkimer Co., NY and had 6 children including Raymond H.; Fred Earl F.; Edna J.; George Arthur; Grace M.; and Jessie M. FORREST, all born between 1883 and 1895. David died 26 Feb 1896 in Russia, NY and is buried in the Gravesville Cemetery as well.
Lillias died 21 Feb 1935 in Gravesville, NY and is also buried in the cemetery there.
