He resided in Hinchinbrooke, Huntingdon, Canada in 1861; however, he is listed as residing in Springfield, Illinois in 1863 when he registered for Civil War draft. He married Elizabeth McLatchie on 24 March 1872 in Hastings, Ontario, Canada. He then was naturalized in Springfiel, IL on 13 Oct 1880. In 1882, Hugh and Elizabeth moved to Spink County, South Dakota where he died 01 June 1921. It does not appear that they had children.
