Comments: George Edward Young (Nee: ) | Elmira NY United States | 1941-1960 | Comments: George Edward Young born July 8 1921 in Hastings, PA to George Andrew & Sabra Cryer Young married Elizabeth Jane Andrews Sept 20, 1941 Pine City man was always there for family, friends By George Osgood Star-Gazette Pine City _ George Young just couldn't do enough. Growing flowers or beating the drums, dancing, or painting, working, or just helping anywhere he could, Mr. Young never quit. Never quit loving either. ''The greatest thing for him was to be involved with his family,'' said Sharon Young of Elmira. ''He just loved everybody. He was a true people-person. But he loved his family the most. ''There wasn't anything he wouldn't do, big or small, to help. He was always there.'' George E. Young, 74, of Pine City, died at St Joeseph's Hospital in Elmira on Friday, May 24, 1966. He was 74. Mr.Young was born in Hastings, PA, and moved to the Elmira area with his family shortly after High school. He enlisted when WWII broke out and flew 52 missions behing a .50-caliber machine gun in a turret on an Army Air Corps B24 bomber. He worked at Ward LaFrance and American LaFrance for more than 30 years, serving as a bid analyst at American - and loving it. ''He was great at customer relations,'' Sharon Young said. ''He would always get the out-of-town customers and take them out and show them a good time, and before they left, they would be doing business with the company. He could take someone out for the night who didn't even speak English and show them a great time without ever talking with them, '' she said. ''That's how he was.'' Mr Young was a self-taught drummer wh played in several bands, including th Joey Augustine Band, in the 1940's and '50's. ''That was his second job.'' Sharon Young said. ''He used to say that was how he got his Christmas money. That man could drum like nobody's business. And he never had a lesson.'' Music was always important to Mr. Young. He loved the big bands, '' Sharon Young said. ''He loved Benny Goodman and all of the others. In fact, he was listening to his little walkman up until about an hour before he passed away.'' Mr. Young was at home in the garden too. And living in nine homes, during his 55-year marriage he had plenty of different ones to work on. ''It was just beautiful, ''Sharon Young said. ''He could grow all kinds of vegetables and flowers. He would take a snip of this and a little snip of that, and put them in his garden and have them growing in no time. And when he got tired of his own garden, he would go aroud to help his children and help them with their gardens, '' she said. In fact, helping was a big part of Mr. Young's life - a pleasure more than a duty - and something the whole family appreciated. ''There wasn't a project in the family that he didn't have a part in,'' his daughter-in-law said. ''It didn't matter whether it was big or small, he was involved. ''He helped re-do kitchens, and He did yard work. If my husband was talking to him and told him that he was going out to mow the lawn 10 minutes later George would be ther with his rake. That's what he did. He always wanted to help with anything.'' Mr Young's children lost not just a father, but a best friend, Sharon Young said. And he was a loving grandfather who lived to see three great grandchildren. And a man who made the most of his time on earth. ''He was just so healthy, so strong right up until the end,'' Sharon Young said. ''He was like a 40 or 50 year old man. He could do anything. People thaought of him like he was immortal, and of course he wasn't. But he lived a good life.''
