Comments: Cassius Marcellus Clay (Nee: ) | KY United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: This portrait of Mr. Cassius Marcellus Clay appears on page 169 of The Rural New Yorker, vol.XLII, no.1729, 17 March 1883. See that reference for more details. Cassius was the son of General Green Clay, who immigrated from Virginia to Kentucky about 1777. General Clay served in the Virginia and Kentucky legislature and also served under General Harrison in the war with the British in 1813. Cassius Marcellus Clay was born in Madison County, Kentucky Oct. 19, 1810. He graduated from Yale in 1832, after which he practiced law in Kentucky and later served in that state's legislature. He later lost a bid for re-election (1841) on account of his opposition to slavery. In 1844 he campaigned for Henry Clay, his relative. In 1845 be began an antislavery newspaper called "The True American." In 1846 he served in the war with Mexico and was taken captive in 1847. In 1861 he was appointed Minister to Russia by President Lincoln. Upon reaching his retirement he devoted his time to agriculture and raising stock.
