He was born in Cumberland, England 10 February 1828. He came to Canada with his parents in 1831. His father bought a farm near Peterborough and engaged in the lumber business. In 1846 the family moved to the County of Oxford and purchased a farm on the 16th con. of East Zorra. Two years later Thomas returned to Peterborough and worked in a sawmill. He later apprenticed at a dry goods store in Brantford and then later he worked at a store in Hamilton. He began his own mercantile business in Woodstock. He developed a great interest in horticulture and floriculture.
