Comments: Stephen Redmond CARTER (Nee: ) | Many La United States | 1851-1900 | Comments: This is the only known photo of Stephen Redmond Carter, who was born in Sabine Parish, Lousiana, appears on 1850-1880 Census in that county...owned "Merritt" Mountain and is buried there. Helped slaves escape down to Jamaca before and during Civil War, was said to have thrown a chest of gold into Sabine River...never been found...area is now a lake. He had five wives (some who died, some who divorced him) and one mistress.
