Comments: Gustav Hammel (Nee: ) | PAINESVILLE OH UNITED STATES | 1851-1900 | Comments: Found! 9/10/2004 Gustavo Gustav born in Bavaria Germay 20 May 1866 immigrated to America on the steamer ship "Waesland" under the direction of Captain Nickels from Antwerp to NewYork arriving 15 Sept 1882. He was 16yrs old, from an unknown village in Germany, occupation : farmer. Apparently traveling alone, he stayed in stearage compartment. (Reference: book, "Germans to America" p. 151 FH film #1027027 titled Passengers to NY 1820-1897.) I have no record of his whereabouts from 1882 until his marriage to Lucy O'Boyle Lannon March 4th, 1893 by a Justice of the Peace in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He appears in Cleveland city directory in the year ending July 1895. He is listed there as"Gustave Hammel, driver, r. 7 Cortlett pl." Also listed in the same directory is "August Hammel, driver, r. 8 Cortlett Pl." I'm thinking this August Hammel must be a relative. The first Census I have found Gustave in is 1900. spelled "Hamel, Gustavo"age 34, a naturalized citizen from Bavaria,Germany having been in US for 18 years, now living at 141 Hamilton Rd, Cleveland , Ohio with wife, Loucy (25) , sons, Carl G. Hamel age 5 & Leo Hamel age 3 both born in Ohio and boarders, Uncle James O'Hara age 38 of Ohio and Charley Eppler age 50 of Maryland. ( We have a clock that Uncle James O'Hara brought back from the Clondike) By 1910, Lucy,34 & Gustav,43 are still located in Cleveland now with 3 sons, Carl 16, Leo 13, and Charles 5. By 1920 Lucy (44) & Gustav(53) lived at 1025 Galewood Dr. Cleveland with son, Leo A. (23) just returned from active duty in Haiti as US Marine, son, Charles P.(15), cousins Elizabeth C. Raymond (33) and Austin Fieurst (37) both of Ohio, and boarder Charles J. Potter (42) of Canada. The latter would be the Charlie Potter who married Lucy after Gustav's death two years later at age 55. His interment record filled out by Lucy, records his father as John Hammel & mother as Friedericka Ebersbecker. Gustav's son Carl Gustav Hammel married Catherine Josephine Veelman of Montville, Geauga County Ohio. They had two sons, Carl Gustav Jr. and John Francis (Jack) and raised them in Mentor on the Lake, a suburb of Cleveland. Carl Gustav Hammel Jr. married Kathryn Joyce Luther also of Mentor and raised two sons, Leonard Michael Hammel and Christopher Dean Hammel (my husband) in Baytown Texas since 1952.
