Comments: MARY REID (Nee: BELL) | | | Comments: USED WITH KIND PERMISSION FROM GENEROUS AND THOUGHTFUL OWNER. Henry Reid / Mary Bell Reid Cabinet Card - circa 1860 s-1880 s Canada? / Massachusetts? Cabinet card photograph identified on the back as: “Henry Reid & wife Mary (Bell), Parents of Geo. W. Reid.” Photographer was W. H. Partridge of Boston, Brookline, Roxbury, and Allston, Mass. She s wearing a beautiful layered satin dress with pagoda sleeves and he s looking dapper in a 3 piece suit with watch chain visible. Back says this is copyrighted 1889. The photo measures 4.25” x 6.5”. Good condition except for some surface damage, the worst being over the gentleman s head. I had the feeling that the photo itself pre-dates the type of cabinet card, meaning that this may be an 1880 s copy of an earlier photo. I showed it to an expert on historic clothing styles and she agrees that the photo was taken NO LATER than 1866, and as early as 1861, based on the womans hair and sleeves and the mans coat lapels. Although we dont think of 19th century photos as being reprints, it was commonplace back then, as it is today, to have older photos reprinted in the "modern" photo format of the day. So an 1860 s tintype could have been reprinted as an 189 s cabinet card, etc. PHOTO ON EBAY.
