Answers:

1. How can I submit a photo?

  1. Make sure that your photos are identified and that they meet Dead Fred's criteria. Currently, the Dead Fred's Photo Archive only contains photos that are older than 1960 of subjects since deceased. All submissions must fall within these guidelines.
  2. Scan each one in JPG format. For best results, scan at 150 dpi resolution or higher and save at 72 dpi.
  3. Click on the "Post Photos" option on the menu, and you will find the submission form. Use the "Browse. . ." button to locate and add the photo file from your computer. Then click on the "Upload Image" button.
  4. Now your photo has its own record number! Follow the prompts on the resulting page. Type in the identification information in the proper fields, and then submit.
  5. Repeat the process for each of your photos.

Your photos will appear online witin 3-5 days of being successfully uploaded.

2. Can you submit a photo if you do not know the name of the person? / How do I submit a photo to the Mysteries page?

Any photo submitted without a surname will be tagged as a mystery and can be found by searching our Mystery database. You may submit mystery photos using the same method outlined above.

3. Can you help me locate my ancestors or my family?

Due to the large amount of correspondence we receive (and because we are all volunteer - and there aren't many of us) we may not be able to personally respond to everyone's request. However, you can post your request to our Yahoo! Group by joining here. There are lots of kind souls who may be able to help or point you in the right direction.

4. Is there a fee in order to submit a photo?

There's no fee. However, if you'd like, you may send a donation to help support the archive. See FAQ #15 below.

5. After I submit a photo, how long will it take before it appears on the site?

Since we are a volunteer effort here at DeadFred, it sometimes takes up to 3-5 days for us to review all of the submitted photos and approve them. This approval process insures that no "funny business" gets added to the archive. If you submit a photo and do not see it on the site after 5 days, please let us know by filling out the contact form, or by emailing webmaster@deadfred.com.

6. Once I have submitted a photo, how long will the photo be on the Dead Fred web site?

The photo will remain on the web site until you request that we remove it.

7. How do I go about getting a copy of a photograph?

If you are requesting the original photo you will need to show proof that you are indeed related to the individual in the photo. If no other person claims to be a direct descendant within a 6-month period, DeadFred.com will send you the photo for free. We only ask that you reimburse us for the postage expense. DeadFred.com will maintain a digital image in the Archive along with your contact information should a family member request for it. (This pertains only to photos owned by DeadFred.com)

To get a digital copy, right click and download the photo to your hard drive for free. You will then be able to print the photo; however, photos cannot be used for commercial purposes.

DeadFred.com could provide a printer copy (Epson 600Q) for $5.00 (s/h included). If you would like a glossy high resolution copy the cost could approximately be $20.00 (s/h included) because a commercial photo company would have to make it.

8. Will there be a way to find out who submitted a photo?

Unless the individual (the donor) has requested that their contact information be withheld, you will be able to contact the submitter by clicking on the "Click Here to Contact Submitter" button that appears directly below the photo record.

9. Will I be able to purchase a photo?

No and maybe. The original identified photos are owned by Dead Fred's Genealogy Photo Archive and are not for sale; however, if you wish to purchase the original of a donated digital image please contact the donor as Dead Fred's Genealogy Photo Archive is not acting as an agent.

If you submitted photos prior to March of 2005, you can make changes by registering with DeadFred.com. The registration form may be found here. If you have trouble getting your temporary password to work, try copying and pasting the password from the original email into the login form. If you are still having trouble, send an email to amanda@deadfred.com. We do not sell your email address or use it for any purpose other than to allow you to update your records.

13. I have seen copyright watermarks on some of the photos. Will you place this on my images?

The copyright logo has been removed from most of the images original to the archive and will not be added to any donated digital photos. We are removing the copyright logos from all images as time allows. These watermarks are not applied directly onto the surfaces of the photos, and were only added to photos owned by the archive.
