The photo you have is of my great great grandfather on my mother’s side. My grandmother was Ellen Shaeffer, who was the daughter of Sophia Elizabeth Matthews, who was Johnithan Matthews daughter. Johnithan is buried in Kansas and I think Mary was also. I have visited both graves. He was in the civil war from NY

This photo was found with my Shaeffer family photos. Written on the back Jonathan P Matthews married at Busti, New York Oct 18th 1855 to Mary Stuart Wemple by William D Henry. To whom were born Sophia Elizabeth Jun 16, 1858 Charles H and Jay P. After some research I found that his daughter Sophia married a man named John Roger Shaeffer. That might explain why it was with our family photos. I am very interested if anyone has ties to Sophia & John Shaeffer.
